"Development of Two-Component Adhesives Made from Recycled Polyurethane from Sealant Foam Cylinders"

In the spring of 2024, under the framework of the incentive financial instrument "PERSPEKTYVA" provided by UAB „Investicijų ir verslo garantijos“, we embarked on a project aimed at creating two-component adhesives based on polyurethane resin, using secondary raw materials for production. The project involves replacing the currently used polyol in adhesive manufacturing with recycled polyurethane obtained from polyurethane foam product waste.

Currently, polyurethane adhesives in the market are made only from new raw materials derived from petroleum products or natural vegetable oils. However, creating two-component adhesives from recycled polyurethane foam would mark a significant technological advancement. This newly developed product, which we plan to patent, will be used in various industries. The two-component adhesives are being developed due to the potentially large and growing market and a significantly higher profit margin compared to existing adhesives, along with better bonding properties. Importantly, using recycled polyurethane foam in the production of two-component adhesives would reduce their environmental impact and waste.

With increasing consumption worldwide, more and more polyurethane product waste is generated, including many unused construction foam cylinders that are discarded due to manufacturing defects, damaged packaging during transportation, or other reasons. Polyurethane foam is a non-biodegradable product, and if not properly managed, it can cause severe environmental damage. Currently, polyurethane waste is disposed of by burning or landfilling, exacerbating the pollution problem. Technologies for recycling polyurethane waste into marketable products are still in development. Recycling polyurethane foam is one of the best ways to reduce its environmental impact and waste. The planned product will consist of recycled polyurethane and a binder (isocyanate).
